This past Monday the skies were grey and the temperature had turned chilly – but the atmosphere inside Southeast Portland’s Bar Maven was warm and cozy as Portland-area actors came together for The Alliance of Professional Performers‘ regular Actors Happy Hour.
After a little comaraderie (seasoned with a dash of food and drink) the assembled performers gathered together to discuss something near and dear to every professional performer’s heart – rates of pay. Of course, every professional expects to be paid for his or her work – but the topic of the evening was what rate of pay professionals should expect from productions in the growing Portland market. It’s something everyone had an opinion about… and APP-NW has taken those opinions and distilled them into specific recommendations for actor pay.
Keep in mind that these recommendations are minimums; every professional performer should feel empowered to negotiate for more. We believe, however, that professional performers should feel comfortable with saying “no” to work that doesn’t at least meet these recommendations.
The evening was entirely focused on serious discussion, though – a lot of laughs were shared as actors re-connected with their fellow performers, and some VERY wide smiles developed on the faces of our raffle winners:
Be sure to mark your calendar for next month’s event on October 21st… We’re looking forward to seeing you and your fellow performers there!
